Basic of Lasik Eye Surgery Arizona

Published on

Introduction

There is a whole bunch of eye defects out there boggling a whole bunch of folks. Regardless of their great number though, three are definitely relatively very common - besides the one associated with age (presbyopia): astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. They are due to "not good enough" shapes of the lens of one's eyes and hence, the very traditional way of making up for the defects in the use of artificial lenses to increase, decrease, or distort the spatial variation of the eye's focal length as the case may be (the focal length is a measure of how much the eye bends the light entering it so as to create a meaningful image). A more permanent way to achieve the same change to the eye's light-bending ability, however, is to reshape the eye itself and this is what laser eye surgery does.

Terminologies

LASIK: laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.
Keratomileusis: also known as corneal reshaping, the surgical reshaping of the cornea to alter its refractive (i.e. light-bending) properties.
Cornea: the transparent front part of the eye.
Refractive Surgery: any form of eye surgery with the ultimate goal to alter the refractive state of the eye.
Myopia: a kind of eye disorder that allows the patient to see clearly only near objects.
Hyperopia: a kind of eye disorder that allows the patient to see clearly only far objects.
Astigmatism: a kind of eye disorder in which the patient sees nothing clearly due to spatially uneven focal length.
Microkeratome: a surgical instrument that has an oscillating blade designed specifically for LASIK.
Presbyopia: hyperopia that occurs due to ageing.
Laser: coherent light that can be concentrated on a spot.

What is Laser Eye Surgery?

To start with, other names for laser eye surgery are laser vision correction and LASIK/ Lasik. That noted laser eye surgery is the refractive surgical process in which the shape of the cornea of the eye is altered with the use of a laser or microkeratome to correct one or more eye disorders.

How Does Laser Eye Surgery Work?

The basic operative procedure of LASIK is simple. A femtosecond laser or microkeratome is used to cut through the upper layer of the cornea so as to create a flap. The flap is created in such a way that it is hinged and can be opened to reveal the underneath without the flap being cut away, much like with a door. The flap is then folded back and the corneal stroma (the underneath layer) is reshaped by precisely vaporizing portions of it with an excimer laser. The flap is then closed and left to heal.
